Research Interests:As an Environmental Geographer, I have interdisciplinary background in the Earth Sciences, with emphasis on biogeography, landscape ecology, and conservation/natural resource issues. My research specializes in the vegetation of southern California and northern Baja California, a biologically diverse Mediterranean-type climate region, with study of shrub and tree species geographic distributions, ecological relationships, patterns of wildfire, and impacts by human land-uses. I use a variety of research methods including field sampling of vegetation, dendrochronology, soil description, weather observation, aerial photographic survey, vegetation mapping with geographical information systems (GIS) and global positioning system (GPS), as well as environmental applications of historical inquiry.
